ICE Detentions in Cville: Local Accountability

Join in demanding local accountability regarding cooperation with ICE for Cville detentions

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and detentions are happening in Charlottesville (see below).

These events will increase in number and frequency and are intended to terrorize all of us, our immigrant and refugee neighbors, their advocates, and anyone who is standing up for due process, democracy and the rule of law.

Our local government – City Council of Charlottesville and Albemarle County Board of Supervisors (BOS) – has not made clear what their agreements are with ICE in regards to detention of our immigrant neighbors.

We need a group of people to communicate directly to City Council and Albemarle BOS and Regional Jail Board Members AND speak at, attend and/or hold signs at these meetings to demand transparency and accountability about the unlawful actions happening in our community. Both speakers and people to support those who are speaking are important to get responses from our officials.

This group will:

  1.  Encourage city and county residents to send letters to their representatives asking for transparency and accountability around the issues of due process, democracy and rule of law. Find your Supervisor here: https://www.albemarle.org/government/board-of-supervisors/who-is-my-supervisor

  2.  Volunteer and/or recruit people to speak at City Council, BOS and Regional Jail Meetings. These could be folks who have a particular perspective on immigration policy (e.g., legal background, direct experience of ICE actions, etc.) or simply care about the issue and are willing to make statements and ask questions.

  3.  Support and share the Immigrant Freedom Fund to raise money for legal services and bond fees for those who are detained in Virginia. The fund is hosted by Congregate Charlottesville and donations are tax-deductible. The ActBlue link for on-line donations: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ccfreedomfund

Questions to ask:

1. Is the City of Charlottesville/County of Albemarle a sanctuary jurisdiction given Youngkin’s executive order? How many people were released to ICE from the regional jail in the last year? Does the jail call ICE to notify them about all undocumented inmates, or report based on the nature of the offense they have committed?

2. Given the recent state and federal Executive Orders about Sanctuary Cities, what is the Regional Jail/County of Albemarle/City of Charlottesville doing in response to these requests for compliance?

3. If the County of Albemarle/City of Charlottesville/Regional Jail is designated a sanctuary jurisdiction by the federal government, will the BoS/City Council/Regional Jail Board continue to comply with ICE detainment policies and hold people for up to 48 hours beyond their scheduled release?

4. What streams of federal revenue are at risk if the County/City does not comply with ICE detainers as the federal government seems to be requesting?

5. Does the City/County have the resources and the will to resist any demands for compliance that come from the federal government?
